Our ESG Success Stories

Case studies on responsible investment stewardship

Healthcare sector

Healthcare

We have been engaging with one of the healthcare providers on governance and succession planning. The company had communicated to the market in recent years that it was undertaking a process to appoint a new CEO.

Outcome

This uncertainty has now been resolved, with the company announcing the appointment of one of its internal candidates as CEO.

Energy / Chemicals sector

Energy / Chemicals

One of South Africa’s largest emitters has historically been slow in developing a credible transition pathway and lacked sufficiently ambitious emissions-reduction targets.

Outcome

We are also participating in a collaborative engagement initiative with CA100+ to continuously engage with the company, monitor progress against its commitments, and ensure that it delivers on its emissions-reduction targets and transition pathway.

Renewable Energy Adoption

Listed Property

We engaged with several property companies to understand their renewable energy strategies, the pace of solar panel installations across their portfolios and how these investments support operational resilience, cost savings and emissions reduction.

Outcome

The companies demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding on-site renewable energy generation, with solar installations becoming an integral part of their capital allocation and sustainability strategies.

Water Stewardship and Climate Strategy

Mining

We sought clarity on the company's strategy to address water shortages in its operating regions, particularly through initiatives that benefit both its operations and local communities.

Outcome

The company has implemented a comprehensive water strategy focused on reducing operational water consumption, improving efficiency and supporting community water security through initiatives such as borehole refurbishment and regional water supply schemes.

Strengthening Executive Remuneration Alignment

Healthcare

Over a number of years, we engaged extensively with the company and its Remuneration Committee to discuss the design of the remuneration policy, the alignment of performance measures with long-term shareholder value, and opportunities to strengthen governance and transparency.

Outcome

The company demonstrated a willingness to listen and respond to shareholder concerns by incorporating several of our recommendations into successive revisions of its remuneration policy.

Improving Mine Safety

Mining

We engaged extensively with the company to better understand the root causes of safety incidents, the effectiveness of its safety management systems, and the measures being implemented to strengthen its safety culture.

Outcome

The company has reported improvements in its safety performance, including a reduction in long-term injuries and stronger overall safety metrics.
