Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about All Weather and what we offer
What happens if I want to lodge a complaint?
Complaints can be submitted in writing - posted, hand-delivered to the manager's physical address, or emailed - and will be investigated internally, with the complainant advised of the outcome.
Is All Weather Capital a licensed financial services provider?
Yes. All Weather Capital (Pty) Ltd (registration no. 2007/008520/07) is an authorised Financial Services Provider, FSP number 36722, licensed as a hedge fund FSP under Section 8 of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS).
Common investment terminology used in Hedge Funds
Gross Exposure - The value of all positions added together, including both long and short positions.
Net Exposure - The total of all long positions less the total of all short positions held by a fund.
Short Selling - The process of borrowing an asset to sell immediately in return for cash, generating a return when the share sold is later rebought at a lower price during the investment period and returned to the original owner (the lender). Hedge fund managers do this for reasons including hedging a specific thematic risk or reducing gross exposure.
Leverage - The use of a financial instrument or borrowed money, such as margin, to increase the potential return of an investment. It may involve shorting a share or using other derivatives. A fund's mandate limits the degree to which leverage may be used.
Volatility - The standard deviation of a fund's return - a measure of how much a fund's return may vary over time.
Alpha - The excess return of a fund over its benchmark's return.
Performance Fee - A fee that may vary annually depending on a fund's performance - a percentage charged on the increase in the fund's net asset value, subject to a high-water mark.
High-Water Mark - The highest historical net asset value (NAV) of the fund. This ensures investors do not pay a performance fee for the fund losing money, or for the same performance twice. It is updated at each crystallisation point - the end of the applicable reporting period, which may be quarterly or yearly.
When was All Weather Capital founded, and who leads it?
All Weather was founded in April 2013 by CIO Shane Watkins. In September 2015, ThirdWay Asset Management Group acquired a controlling stake in the firm.
